One skill that every professional should have especially during job interview is the ability to create great impression from the interviewer based on how they dressed. The right attire is a measure of how serious you are to get that job and it would convey that you can get the job done.
If you are called for a job interview, some interviewers may inform you on what specific dress they want you to wear beforehand, and some may not. In circumstances like this, you need to ask or research about the company’s industry, culture and position for which you are applying so that you wouldn’t be caught off guard during the day of your interview.
For the company that you know is a bit more casual, consider taking the safe approach with business casual attire. The following are some tips that may help you decide on what to wear during job interview:
MEN
Shirts that have collars. Long sleeve button down shirts and dark slacks. White is the safest and the best color for shirts. Other colors are pale shades such as beige, blue, and other pastels. Always tuck the shirt and do not roll up the sleeves. Wear pants styles such as khakis, slacks, dress pants, trousers, and corduroy pants. Never ever wear jeans because it’s not considered casual.
Ties. Optional. But if you wear one, choose a tie that is red, solid tie or one with a conservative pattern.
Belts should match your shoes.
Dark socks and Dark Shoes. Never wear white socks! No skin should also show when you sit down or cross your legs. Shoes must also be polished and cleaned.
Hair. Keep neat, short and preferably parted on the side. Clean shave, trimmed mustache, no beards or excessive facial hair should be seen.
No or little jewelry. The only acceptable jewelry for men are the watch and wedding ring. Avoid political or religious insignias, necklaces or bracelets. No visible body piercings or tattoos should be seen.
Hygiene. Clean your nails. Make sure you have fresh breath. Brush your teeth before you go on the job interview. Stay away from gum, candy, or cigarettes before the interview.
WOMEN
Solid colored business suit, blouse and skirt or slacks, and cardigan twin sets. Never wear sleeveless shirts. Your suit should be comfortable and fit you well. Skirts should be in the knee length. You may also wear pants such as khakis, corduroy pants, linen pants or dress pants. Never wear jeans.
Closed Shoes or pumps with at least 1 1/2 – inch heels suggest a more professional look and adds confidence as you walk into the interview room. Dark colors are recommended. Avoid flip flops, sandals and sneakers.
Panty-hose or stocking is a must for professional grooming. It should be neutral (matched to your skin tone) and not with an overly fussy patters. Bring an extra pair, just in case the ones you are wearing run.
Hair should be neat, clean and conservatively styled. Hair longer than shoulder length should be worn up or pulled back. Don’t let it fall in front of your face and don’t keep trying to fix it during the interview. The idea is to look polished and professional.
Light Make-up. Natural is the keyword. Light shades of lip coloring and nail polish is also recommended.
Less Jewelry. Flashy and noisy jewelry are just a distraction.
Hygiene. Shower or bathe the morning before the interview. Wear deodorant. Clean your nails. Make sure you have fresh breath. Brush your teeth before you go on the job interview and don’t eat or smoke before the interview.
If the company you are applying with has a casual environment, it is still important to be well groomed. You should look neat and tidy to portray a positive image and you should wear the appropriate attire in this situation. And don’t forget to flash that smile!
